Haaretz: Rapid Settlement Expansion in the Northern West Bank Reshapes Reality on the Ground

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz has reported a significant acceleration in settlement expansion projects across the northern West Bank, stating that these initiatives are advancing at a rapid pace and are increasingly creating new realities on the ground with government and military backing.

According to the newspaper, the region is witnessing what it described as a "settlement revolution," as settlers work to revive plans and ambitions linked to settlements that were evacuated nearly two decades ago under Israel's 2005 Disengagement Plan.

Haaretz noted that the disengagement plan, implemented by the government of former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, included the evacuation of settlements and military installations in the Gaza Strip, as well as four settlements in the northern West Bank. However, recent years have seen growing efforts to restore and expand the settlement presence in those areas.

The newspaper reported that the settlement drive is accompanied by extensive changes on the ground, including the takeover of additional Palestinian land and the displacement of large numbers of Palestinians from various areas, contributing to the consolidation of a new reality in the region.

Citing sources within the Israeli military, Haaretz said that senior security officials have expressed concern that these developments could further escalate tensions and fuel conflict in the area.

The report added that settler representatives within the Israeli government coalition have achieved significant political gains that are being translated into expanded settlement activity. It also noted that the pace of these efforts accelerated following the formation of Israel's current right-wing government and intensified further after the events of October 7, 2023.

These developments come as the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to pursue policies aimed at expanding settlements and increasing control over land in the occupied Palestinian territories. Meanwhile, the international community continues to regard Israeli settlements in occupied territory as illegal under international law and a major obstacle to a two-state solution.
