Researcher Dr. Walid Al-Basha has documented a rare ornithological observation in the plains of Jenin, capturing what is believed to be the first recorded image in Palestine of a male Ruff (Calidris pugnax) beginning its transition into breeding plumage in preparation for the mating season.
Dr. Al-Basha explained that the bird was expected to continue its migration toward its breeding grounds in northern Eurasia. However, an injury to one of its legs prevented it from completing the journey alongside its flock. As a result, the bird remained in Palestine beyond its normal migration schedule, allowing hormonal changes associated with the breeding season to emerge despite its presence in a migratory stopover area rather than a breeding site.
Male Ruffs typically display a dull grayish-brown plumage during the winter and migration periods. As the breeding season approaches, however, they undergo a remarkable transformation, developing an elaborate ornamental ruff and distinctive head tufts in a variety of colors, including black, chestnut, and white. Their legs and bare skin areas also change to a bright orange coloration.
The observation is considered scientifically significant, providing a rare opportunity to study the physiological changes and breeding-related behaviors of migratory birds outside their natural breeding range. It also highlights the ecological importance of Palestinian wetlands and stopover habitats, which serve as critical resting and refueling sites for migratory birds during their long seasonal journeys.
Dr. Al-Basha noted that injured or weakened birds may occasionally remain in stopover areas for extended periods, enabling researchers to document unusual behaviors and biological phenomena that are rarely observed under normal circumstances. Such observations contribute to a deeper understanding of migration dynamics and the adaptive strategies employed by wild bird species.
