Palestinian Efforts Continue to Protect Gaza’s Cultural Heritage Amid Wartime Destruction

 الأراضي المقدسة الخضراء / GHLands

The ongoing war in the Gaza Strip has inflicted severe damage on the territory’s cultural and historical heritage, with museums and archaeological sites among the sectors hardest hit. Numerous artifacts and historical collections have been destroyed, damaged, or remain buried beneath the rubble.

One of the most significant examples is the Al-Qarara Museum, where more than 3,500 archaeological artifacts are believed to remain trapped under the ruins of the destroyed building. The historic Pasha’s Palace Museum, one of Gaza’s most important landmarks dating back to the Mamluk era, has also sustained major losses, with a substantial portion of its collection reportedly damaged or lost following military operations in Gaza’s Old City.

Efforts to Salvage What Remains

Despite the difficult humanitarian conditions and widespread displacement across the Gaza Strip, Palestinian academics, archaeologists, and heritage specialists continue to document losses and work to preserve what remains of the territory’s cultural legacy.

Those involved in these efforts stress that protecting archaeological collections is not only about safeguarding historical objects, but also about preserving Palestinian identity, collective memory, and cultural continuity.

Significant Historical Landmarks Affected

Dr. Hammouda Al-Dahdar, Director of the Sites and Excavations Department at Gaza’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, said that several museums and heritage sites have suffered extensive damage during the war.

Among the affected locations are historic areas in the neighborhoods of Shuja’iyya and Al-Tuffah, as well as the Pasha’s Palace Museum, Al-Qarara Museum, and Al-Aqqad Museum. According to Al-Dahdar, some of the damaged artifacts date back to the Roman and Byzantine periods, highlighting the scale of the loss inflicted on Gaza’s cultural heritage.

Documentation and Archiving as a Last Line of Defense

Heritage specialists continue to carry out documentation and archiving initiatives aimed at preserving records of damaged artifacts and historical sites. These efforts are intended to support future restoration projects and ensure that valuable historical information is not lost.

Experts note that the Pasha’s Palace Museum attracted tens of thousands of visitors each year before the war, reflecting its cultural, educational, and historical significance for both local residents and visitors.

Preserving Cultural Identity

Cultural heritage experts emphasize that protecting museums, archaeological sites, and historical landmarks is an essential part of safeguarding Palestinian cultural identity and preserving historical memory for future generations.

Amid the widespread destruction of cultural institutions across Gaza, ongoing documentation and preservation efforts have become a critical step toward protecting what remains of the territory’s rich heritage and laying the groundwork for future restoration and recovery.
