GHLands : Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said on Monday that Israel has launched what he described as a "settlement revolution," stressing that plans to expand settlements will not be limited to the occupied West Bank but will also extend to the Negev and the Galilee.
Smotrich's remarks come amid an accelerated expansion of Israeli settlements under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government, which relies on the support of far-right pro-settlement parties to maintain its parliamentary majority.
In a related development, Israel's Security Cabinet approved last Thursday a plan to establish 13 new settlements in the Binyamin region of the central occupied West Bank. The first phase of the project is expected to begin in the coming months.
At the same time, settler attacks, land leveling operations, and land confiscations continue across several areas of the occupied West Bank, amid a noticeable escalation in the pace of such incidents.
According to the Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission, more than 3,400 attacks have been documented since the beginning of the year. Meanwhile, the Israeli anti-settlement organization Peace Now estimates that approximately 500,000 Israeli settlers live in the occupied West Bank, in addition to around 250,000 residing in settlements in occupied East Jerusalem.
